Why Summer Breakouts + Eczema Flares Are So Common — and What You Can Do About It

If you’ve dealt with eczema or sensitive, reactive skin, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

That feeling when your skin starts to prickle before a flare. The dry patches that show up out of nowhere. The itchiness that doesn’t ease - especially in the heat.

For me, summer used to be the worst.

Inside my elbows would flare. My lips would crack. Some days I’d get breakouts even though I hadn’t changed a thing in my routine. I was eating well, exercising, using “clean” products - but still, my skin felt angry.

And no one really talks about that. About how summer, for some of us, doesn’t mean glowing skin - it means managing it harder.

So… Why Does Skin Get Worse in the Heat?

It’s not just the sweat (although that doesn’t help).

The real issue is this: your skin barrier takes a hit in the summer.

Here’s how:

  • Heat increases water loss from the skin, which dries out the barrier.
  • More sweat + bacteria = more irritation, especially if you’re prone to eczema.
  • We often cleanse more frequently or more harshly - trying to stay “clean” - which can strip your skin further.
  • Add friction from clothes, movement, and shaving into the mix, and you’ve got a perfect storm.

And where does it show up first?

Inside the elbows. Behind the knees. Underarms. Around the lips. The delicate, foldy, easy-to-irritate spots.

What Actually Helped (My Rituals, Not a Routine)

For years, I tried to fix it with more products. I’d overcorrect, hoping something would give me relief.

Eventually, I stripped everything back. I focused on calming, minimal care - and started making things myself when I couldn’t find what I needed.

That’s how Rêver Beau started - from a need, not a niche.

Here’s what made a real difference for me:

  • Post-shower barrier support: After training or sweating, I’d apply a few drops of a calming oil I made myself - now called Calm Cactus Oil - to help reduce that tight, inflamed feeling.
  • Magnesium baths in the evening: Not only did this soothe my body, it made my skin feel less reactive and supported overall recovery.
  • A nourishing lip butter I could take anywhere: I created Cocoa Lip Butter because everything I tried either sat on my skin or wore off too quickly. I needed something to heal, not just coat.

These rituals helped rebuild my barrier and bring my skin back to baseline - especially during the hotter months when everything felt more reactive.

If You’re Dealing With Summer Flares, You’re Not Alone

You don’t need to overhaul your routine or use 10 products.

You don’t need to keep searching for miracle solutions.

You just need calm.

Supportive ingredients.

And a little consistency.

I made these products because I couldn’t find what I needed.

Now they’re part of my everyday - especially when the heat hits.

If your skin goes off in summer, I get it.

These rituals were made for skin like ours.
